Traffic tickets in Iowa normally result in a fine. Also, having too many moving violations within a certain period can lead to license suspension. (Of course, if you’re able to beat the ticket in court, you won’t have to worry about these consequences.)

Below are the fines, jail time, and other consequences for some common traffic violations in Iowa. The specific penalties for a traffic ticket can vary depending on the circumstances of the case and surcharges and court costs can increase the amount you actually end up paying for a ticket.

What are the Fines for Iowa Speeding Tickets?

The penalties for speeding tickets in Iowa depend mostly on the driver's speed in relation to the speed limit.

Iowa's Two Types of Speed Limits

Iowa has absolute speed limits and a basic speed law. An absolute limit is just the maximum speed (which is typically posted) a motorist can drive on a certain roadway or portion thereof. The basic law, on the other hand, requires motorists to always drive at a “careful and prudent speed not greater than nor less than is reasonable and proper” given the current conditions. In other words, if your speed is unsafe, you can get a ticket even if you don’t exceed the absolute speed limit. (Iowa Code Ann. § 321.285 (2025).)

What Are the Fines for Stop Sign and Stop Light Tickets in Iowa?

In Iowa, red light and stop sign violations carry the same penalties.

Iowa's Stop Sign and Traffic Signal Rules

At a stop sign or stop light, motorists must come to a complete stop before the nearest of a limit line, entering the crosswalk, or entering the intersection itself. In Iowa, making a right turn at a red light is permitted provided there’s no sign at the intersection explicitly prohibiting it. (Iowa Code Ann. § 321.257 (2025); Iowa Code Ann. § 321.322 (2025).)

Iowa's Texting and Cell Phone Rules for Drivers

Iowa’s distracted driving laws prohibit all motorists from texting while driving. Drivers using an instruction permit or intermediate driver’s license are also prohibited from talking on a cell phone while driving. (Iowa Code Ann. § 321.276 (2025); Iowa Code Ann. § 321.180B (2025).)
